Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley
Ava DuVernay is a Californian born in Long beach on the 24th of August, 1972. Her aunt Denise was a great influence on her enthusiasm for artwork and inspiration. Her aunt worked the evening shift as a nurse so she could pursue her love for theater and art during the day. She introduced DuVernay to the film of 1961 West Side Story and DuVernay discovered a love for it. DuVernay discovered through her example that art was an avenue for action. In the same way, her mother was conscious of social issues and taught how to express herself by using the arts. Although DuVernay lived in Compton with her family, she was a summer resident with her family in Lowndes County Alabama where her father's family lived for generations. Her father, who was DuVernay's dad, reminisced iconic civil rights demonstration on the Edmund Pettus Bridge in the adjacent town Selma Alabama. DuVernay's time in Selma, Alabama inspired her to produce a film on Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. DuVernay graduated with a high school diploma at Saint Joseph High School, Lakewood California in 1990. DuVernay attended University of California Los Angeles following her graduation, and obtained diplomas in English as well as African American Studies. DuVernay began producing content for the broadcast industry while she was still in college. Her first job was as an intern for CBS News during the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay recalled being asked to investigate the waste at the home of one of the jury. When she was dissatisfied with journalism and the jobs she was assigned, she was inspired to start a new career in public relations. DuVernay got a job right from college to be an intern at the studio that was small. Her first venture was The DuVernay Agency, her public relations firm in 1999. She also started several promotion and lifestyle networks for the urban beauty industry, including the Urban Beauty Collective. The actress is most well-known for American Experience (1987) and A More Perfect Union (2009). Autumn appeared as Rose on the screen in A More Perfect Union, as well as Anna Payne in American Experience.
